The works of several of the scholars quoted above (Jung, Hochschild, Gutmann, Erikson, Chinen) point in a vague way towards a developmental process which, by and large, has been neglected by gerontologists.
He did not, however, say much about the general developmental process behind the different ways of handling the crises in the second half of life.
In both cases the process of aging is regarded as a developmental process, which, at very best, ends with a higher state of maturity-in Erikson's case, ego-integrity, in ours, gerotranscendence.
The question of gerotranscendence and life satisfaction, which builds on the theory's assumption that the development toward gerotranscen- dence is a natural developmental process associated with an increase in life satisfaction.
Again, this follows from the assumption that development toward gerotranscendence is a natural positive developmental process, which is followed by contentment, satisfaction, and, consequently, reduced need for psychotropics.
